I’d intended to write this post closer to the 1st, but it’s now the 18th. Whoops. Still, even though I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore, I do like to set a few writing goals for myself. So, without further ado, here are my 2021 writing goals.
Publish a Book
This has been my number one goal since the second I started writing my first book way back in my senior year of high school. I’m 37 now and it hasn’t happened yet but I have a feeling this is my year. Mainly because I have a bunch of books that I’m very happy with and would love to put out in the world. Now it’s a matter of figuring out if I should traditionally publish or self-publish.
Increase my Instagram Followers
I currently have 109 followers, which isn’t too shabby, especially for someone who hasn’t done a whole lot to get more followers. I don’t post nearly enough. I know there’s an art and science to increasing follower numbers and I’d like to figure out how. Publishing my own book would probably help.
Start my YouTube Channel
I first discovered YouTube back in 2006 when I was obsessed with a certain soap opera couple (Jonathan and Tammy from Guiding Light, in case you were curious). But not long after, I discovered fashion and beauty videos, then daily vloggers, and pretty soon, I was in love. Now I check YT multiple times a day and subscribe to all kinds of channels, including authortubers. I’d love to post about my writing process and my journey to being published. Now I just have to work up the energy to film and edit videos.
Connect with Other Writers
My best friend is a writer, which is awesome, but we don’t write the same genres, which is less awesome. I would love to find some romance writer friends to boost me when I’m feeling like my writing sucks and to cheer me on when I’m doing good (and I’d do the same for them). Before the pandemic I’d considered joining some writing groups, but now I think I’m going to have to work harder to find online resources.
Enjoy Editing More
There is nothing I love more than working on a first draft. Every draft after that, however, I hate. I realize I’m the anomaly here because most writers find the first draft a slog and love prettying up their work in the editing process. But I don’t. Editing is excruciating for me and so not enjoyable. But I’m a writer and editing is a major part of the process, so I need to suck it up and stop complaining and try and somewhat like it.
Post One Blog a Month
As you can tell, I haven’t been great about posting blogs on this site. To be fair, since I’m trying to get published, I’m more focused on my fiction writing. But it’s important to keep my author site updated, so I’m going to try and post one blog a month, which I think is do-able. Famous last words, I know.
