Last year around this time, I posted my 2021 Writing Goals. Let’s see if I accomplished any of them (spoiler alert: I accomplished ONE).
Goal One: Publish a Book
Did I? No
Here’s the thing: getting a book published is a long process, whether you’re going the traditional route or the self-publishing one. I finally decided I wanted to self-publish last year, so now I’m gearing up to have the first book in the series I’d like to release edited. Editing takes awhile, and depends on when freelance editors can fit me into their busy schedules. At this point, I think it’s wildly unrealistic for me to aim for publishing a book this year. But watch out, 2023.
Goal Two: Increase My Instagram Followers
Did I? No
I’m ashamed to admit I once again spent a year whole neglecting my author Instagram account. I hardly posted. Did I scroll through my feed twice a day and like and comment on other accounts? Yes. But I made no effort to get my own account up and running. That will change this year, I swear.
Start my YouTube Channel
Did I? No
Yet another thing I kept putting off and putting off and now here we are, with no videos filmed. I have the equipment, I have the time. Now I just need to do it. As with most things in life, easier said than done.
Connect with Other Writers
Did I? No
Once again, something that I know I need to do but I’ve let fall to the bottom of my list.
Enjoy Editing More
Did I? YES!
Whoo-hoo! I achieved one of my goals! Mainly because I spent a lot of time in 2021 editing. I forced myself to edit more and what do you know, I slowly began to enjoy it. Is writing a first draft still my number one favorite thing to do? Yes. Will I ever love editing more than writing a first draft? Doubtful. But now when it’s time to dive into draft two, three, four, or five, I don’t feel a sinking sensation of dread. So mission accomplished. Good job, Jessica.
Post One Blog Per Month
Did I? No
I thought I could easily post one blog a month here. And I could’ve. But I didn’t. The truth is, I’ve badly neglected this site and I need to do more with it, especially if I plan to start releasing books next year.
So there you have a review of my 2021 goals.
Next week, I’ll post my 2022 goals and I’ll try not to just make them a retread of what I wanted to do in 2021.
